Born in 1947 in Aachen, photographer Dirk Reinartz, who died in 2004, began his career as the youngest photo reporter for Stern magazine. Following his studies at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, he was a member of the VISUM photographer’s collective from 1977 to 1982. His work appeared in all major magazines, including Life, Der Spiegel, the Süddeutsche Zeitung and ZEIT magazine supplements and the German journal Art. A focal point of his photographic work was the examination of the political and mental situation within Germany on both sides of the inner German border. He worked together with editors and writers on this and consistently succeeded in opening up a new, personal level of experience through his images, independent of the text. The exhibition at the Wall Memorial shows various series from the period before and after the fall of the Wall, and thus not only recalls a great photographer, but also a time marked by radical changes, great hopes and the shifting of familiar visual worlds.
