On 1 October 2020, the Bundestag adopted a motion tabled by the FDP, Left Party and Alliance 90/The Greens parliamentary groups for the establishment of a 3rd committee of inquiry. The opposition parliamentary groups voted in favour of the motion, whilst the governing coalition groups abstained. The mandate of this nine-member committee is to investigate the conduct of the Federal Government and the agencies it supervises in connection with events surrounding the now-bankrupt financial-services provider Wirecard.
The Committee of Inquiry has appointed Wolfgang Wieland, a former Justice Senator in Berlin and Member of the Bundestag, as Special Investigator pursuant to Section 10 of the Committees of Inquiry Act, to concentrate particularly on those aspects of the Committee’s mandate connected with the intelligence services. In addition, he will be available as a point of contact for potential whistle-blowers with regard to the whole of the Committee of Inquiry’s mandate (firstname.lastname@example.org).
