Antony Gormley: Steht und Fällt

Antony Gormley: Steht und Fällt (German Bundestag/Erfurt)

born 1950 in London, lives in London.

British artist Antony Gormley has flooded the inner courtyard of House 6 of the Jakob Kaiser Building with water, so that now only a raised walkway leads from the building diagonally into the courtyard. Like a dark mirror, the surface of the water catches the light from the sky above. Castiron sculptures of human figures project out at right angles to the side walls, facing skywards as if they are about to run up the walls. The sculptures are also reflected in the water.

With these figurative iron sculptures Gormley explores the theme of experiencing one’s own physicality in the contemplation of another body, although here the body has a disturbing effect on the viewer by being placed in an unfamiliar spatial and conceptual context. In this way the artist (and the viewer) gains new and surprising perspectives from a conventional sculptural theme.
