Committees

Role and responsibilities

Its deliberations often touch on highly controversial issues, which is why the Defence Committee meets behind closed doors. After all, what is at stake is the security of the country, its allies and, not least, the Bundeswehr soldiers on duty. Germany’s role in international security policy and the Bundeswehr’s mission have changed, particularly in view of the threat from global terrorism. One essential function performed by the 38 members of the Defence Committee is the parliamentary scrutiny of the Federal Ministry of Defence and its subordinate agencies and offices. In this respect, it plays an important part in the adoption of the defence budget, and the procurement of armaments and material for the Bundeswehr.
