The Committee on Food and Agriculture at the German Bundestag has a wide remit. Topics of importance in the Committee’s work during the 19th electoral term include: maintaining and creating fair conditions for German farms, ensuring safe, high-quality food products for consumers, promoting a healthy diet, improving animal welfare in livestock farming, strengthening rural areas, safeguarding the future of the forestry and fishery sectors and of horticulture and winemaking; and tackling the major challenges in global food security.
The agri-food sector, together with its upstream and downstream industries, forms a value chain which is not only significant in macroeconomic terms, but is also a motor for jobs in Germany; one in nine jobs in Germany is linked directly or indirectly with the agri-food industry.
