To mark the 75th anniversary of the Basic Law, the Art Council of the German Bundestag has invited nineteen artists to explore the fundamental rights. Another artist was commissioned to create a twentieth contribution to the project, in which over the course of a year, creative interpretations of the terms freedom and dignity were developed with children and young adults. In this way, the people also became part of the exhibition – represented by the workshop participants, who have each given us a small work of art to display.

The artists involved were:

  • Tuli Mekondjo (Article 1 of the Basic Law)
  • Adi Hoesle (Article 2 of the Basic Law)
  • Monica Bonvicini (Article 3 of the Basic Law)
  • Ilit Azoulay (Article 4 of the Basic Law)
  • Kubra Khademi (Article 5 of the Basic Law)
  • Małgorzata Mirga-Tas (Article 6 of the Basic Law)
  • Tobias Zielony (Article 7 of the Basic Law)
  • Harald Hauswald (Article 8 of the Basic Law)
  • Annette Kelm (Article 9 of the Basic Law)
  • Via Lewandowsky (Article 10 of the Basic Law)
  • Said Baalbaki (Article 11 of the Basic Law)
  • Rémy Markowitsch (Article 12 of the Basic Law)
  • Uli Aigner (Article 13 of the Basic Law)
  • Hans Haacke (Article 14 of the Basic Law)
  • Fatoş İrwen (Article 15 of the Basic Law)
  • Guillaume Bruère (Article 16a of the Basic Law)
  • Thomas Locher (Article 17 of the Basic Law)
  • Marc Jung (Article 18 of the Basic Law)
  • Boris Mikhailov (Article 19 of the Basic Law)
  • Barbara Wrede (workshop project) and 1572 participants in her project

The artists involved represent an enormous breadth of contemporary art and thus a wide variety of access points and means of starting a dialogue about the Basic Law. A universe full of possibilities has been created, a space full of stories and ways of discovering these and comparing them with individual experiences. It is an exhibition about US: who we are and want to be, today and in the future. We extend a warm invitation to all.

Focus shows

Over the course of the exhibition, the participating artists will be featured in focus shows, with additional works and work cycles being presented on the lower level of the exhibition space. The focus shows will change every two months. From 3 October to 30 November, the focus will be on Guillaume Bruère, Annette Kelm and Via Lewandowsky. Next door, in the German Bundestag’s Berlin Wall Memorial, we are displaying Harald Hauswald’s “Texas Box” until 31 January 2026.
